Environmental Changes and Their Impact on Women in Northeastern Syria: Health, Agriculture, and Stability

The world is witnessing rapid environmental changes that directly affect ecosystems and biological balance, posing significant challenges to sustainable development efforts, especially in conflict-affected areas such as Syria, with a particular focus on its northeastern region. This research examines the main factors contributing to these changes, including climate change, agricultural pests, environmental pollution, drought, rising temperatures, and extreme climate fluctuations. It explores their impact on natural resources, biodiversity, economic activities, and their health consequences on local communities from a feminist perspective.

This study, the first published by GAV organization’s Research and Studies Department, presents findings on the effects of environmental changes on women’s health, social and economic stability in northeastern Syria, the impact of water scarcity and the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides on them, and the role that women play in agriculture in the region.

The research highlights proposed solutions and policies to mitigate the effects of environmental changes, focusing on sustainability strategies, transitioning to clean energy, and enhancing international cooperation. It also aims to provide scientific insights to support policymakers in developing more efficient plans to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future for coming generations.

The significance of publishing this study lies in its pioneering attempt to understand the repercussions of environmental changes from a feminist perspective in northeastern Syria, amid growing global warnings classifying environmental changes as one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. This necessitates the adoption of new policies to address these risks, which may require altering our lifestyles, production, and consumption patterns. A rapidly changing climate demands intensive, costly, and complex efforts to adapt, recalibrate life’s rhythms, and ultimately mitigate its impacts.
