Assessing the needs of displaced persons fleeing the fighting from Deir Al-Azur

Since the beginning of the armed conflict in Syria, Deir Al-Azur has witnessed during the few months ago, the largest wave of civilians displacement due to the fighting taking place between the Syrian regime’s forces and ISIS, in addition to other fightings taking place between Syria’s democratic forces supported by the international coalition on one hand, and the elements of ISIS militant on the other.
The waves of displacement went mainly to the areas controlled by Syria’s democratic forces in the province of Al-Hasaka and to the eastern part of the Euphrates River in the eastern province of Deir Al-Azur.
Areas of displacement:
According to a report prepared by the Health Bureau of the Office of Organization Affairs and Social Affairs of the Department of Self-Management in cooperation with the civil Council of Deir Al-Azur and the Council of Syria’s democracy, the cities of Al Boukamal, Almayadeen, the towns of Al-Azhar and Al-Muhsin, villages of Al-Maraia, Bolil, Mahkan, Sobikhan and Al Qoreia, as well as the city of Deir Al-Azur, represent the most areas which witnessed waves of human displacement until now because of fighting there.
A number of displaced:
More than 32,000 of civilians displaced have arrived the east of the Euphrates River from the south of the river. And 183 families are living in 202 tents in Deir Al-Azur camp, including 193 children aged 1 to 10, and 93 children aged 11 to 18, and 73 children aged 11 to 18 years.
The Deir Al-Azur camp is located in Al-Mabash area in Abu-Khashab district, 105 km from the city center of Deir Al-Azur and the same distance from the center of Al-Hasakah city.
Needs assessment:
The Deir Al-Azur camp for displaced persons contains 202 tents, 10 baths, 5 for women and 5 for men, a camp management room and 18 water tanks with a capacity of five drums each.
The camp needs:
– Health point/Center
– Manual-held fire extinguishers
– Tents
– Kitchens
– Food aid
– Health assistance
– Water tanks
– Garbages (containers)
– Providing support for one of the bakeries shops in the region, such as flour and fuel to cover the needs of displaced
– Lighting for the camp
– Winter clothes for children and parents
– Rehabilitation of damaged schools
– Demining of schools
– Distribution of school bags and stationery to children
– Providing fuel to the schools
– Providing logistics assistance to the schools
Basic service needs for the local community:
– Rehabilitation of the three water stations in the villages of Aljazrat region (generators – cutters – fuel).
– Bakeries support (flour – fuel)
– Construction of a bakery in the area of Abu Khashab
– Rehabilitation of cellular networks
– Rehabilitation of grain silos and quarries and investment
A spread of diseases and health needs:
There are many documented cases among the displaced, especially in the Deir Al-Azur camp, including: asthma, stress, diabetes, hepatitis, bone marrow cancer, diabetic foot, Leishmania, fractures, heart and arterial stiffness, pregnant women and physical disabilities.
Displaced persons at the medical point/center, urgently need:
– Blood pressure monitors
– Spray device
– Recovery device
– Simple suture tools
– Oxygen cylinder
– Bed for diagnostic
– Transfer boards for patients
– Diabetic analysis apparatus
– Serum holders
– Thermometers
– Electric generators
Pharmaceutical needs for the medical center:
– Vaccines for children aged one to five years with tetanus vaccine
– Medications for chronic diseases (diabetes – blood pressure – heart – asthma – liver)
– Combating lice, scabies, and Leishmania
– Anti-poisoning and insect bites
– Anti-inflammatory drugs for children and adults
– Painkiller for adults
– Pain killer and children’s hypothermia
– Injections for allergy and insect bites
– An anti-cough and flu for children and adults
– Anti-diarrhea and constipation for children and adults
– Vitamins for malnutrition for children and adults.
– Ointments for burns and wounds
– Disinfectants of all kinds
– Serums (saline – sugary – mixed)
– Antibiotics
– Baby milk and towels for children and people with special needs
– Sprays for asthma
– Contraindications
Hospitals and health centers in the area need also to be rehabilitated to enable them providing health services to the displaced and to the community because of increasing numbers.
About 20,000 people live in Al-Shadadi camp amidst difficult humanitarian conditions, especially in the winter. In the coming period, the organization will try to organize a campaign to assess the needs of the camp and publish them in turn.
Organizations operating in Deir Al-Azur:
Only 10 local and international organizations are active, with a large needs and weak potential, in assisting and providing services to displaced people mostly fleeing from the regions of Deir Al-Azur. In addition to the urgent need to launch an appeal campaign for organizations and encourage them to go to the region and provide services to the displaced.
